Gilford Park

At last ! The opening day of the NWCFL 2017/18 season and Chaddy made the 240 mile round trip to Carlisle City F.C in very un-August like weather ! Normally on opening day you're reaching for the suncream, but we were more likely to be reaching for our brollies yesterday.

It's been a busy Summer at the Ark with several players moving on including PPOTY Matty Crothers, Jack Tuohy and Sam Gibson amongst others. Mark Howard and Assistant Ian Hulme haven't been letting the grass grow under them though, and have strenghthened the squad with quality. In has come notably Mikey Moss from Royton Town, Dom Welsby, Aaron Holton and James Dwyer, keeping top experienced players like keeper Mike Smith, Chris Pauley and Dale Minor has been crucial as well. Last season it was clear to see the fantastic team spirit that Mark Howard had created, and it was easy to see on this trip that there can be very few teams in this or any other division, with a team cameraderie that equals Chadderton FC.

Last season we managed a 4-0, 0-1 double over Carlisle City but summer is a long time in football and Tank and Hulmey would never let complacency set in, so nothing was taken for granted other than 90 minutes of hard graft would be required as Carlisle had strengthened over the Summer.

Carlisle City are a very friendly club with a great set-up at Gillford Park, whose playing surface looked perfect as the Chaddy lads had a walkabout looking very smart in the new Mazzo Resaurant sponsored gear.

The clouds around Carlisle threatened a downpour which luckily never came, although you'd have had no trouble seeing Chaddy in their luminous lime green away kit which looks the business.

Mike Smith did the formalities for Chaddy as captain and then bang on 3pm the 2017/18 Hallmark Security League kicked off.

The game started at a very quick tempo with both sides looking to stamp their authority on the game and take control. The Sky Blues of Carlisle City are no long ball merchants though and both sides were committed to playing a quality passing game even at a fast pace. It was nip and tuck until the 23rd minute, when after some good work LUKE HERON powered an unstoppable drive into the top corner to put Chaddy in front. There was some more good attacking play from Chaddy, notably Luke Heron crossing from the left with Nathan Quinlan narrowly failing to connect. HT : 0-1

Chadderton came out after half-time looking to really impose themselves on the game and 12 minutes after the break MIKEY MOSS on his Chadderton & NWCFL  debut got the goal his lively forward play deserved doubling Chaddy's advantage with a lovely right foot shot. 3 minutes later in the 60th minute LUKE HERON looked to have put the game beyond Carlisle with a nice finish after good work on the right hand side by Nathan Quinlan.

Almost immediately Carlisle looked to have got themsleves back in the game when captain Mike Smith was judged to have brought down a Carlisle City attacker when challenged and the ball spilled out. Smudger was beaten from the spot last week in a friendly vs Beechfield United, but there was no repeat this week and he dived to his left to keep out the shot and preserve our 0-3 lead. Chadderton now looked very good for our lead and it was no more than MIKEY MOSS deserved after also hitting the woodwork when he crashed a shot in on the 90th minute to complete a memorable debut at this level.

All told it was an excellent performance from Chadderton, Carlisle is always a tough place to visit with the traveling and they are a very useful team who will clearly get results this season. The Chadderton defence were solid, rarely looking like they would concede the lead, midfield were strong with Aaron Holton and Dominic Welsby performing very well whilst up front Luke Heron could easily have got the MOTM award from Mikey Moss. Leon Iluobe also was very lively when he came on as sub and on another day could have increased Chaddy's advantage going close a couple of times. Due to the situationwith the new pitch at Ark Fleetech we now have an enforced break until the very tough game away at Litherland REMYCA on August 26th so it was crucial to get a win and the 3 points on the board on matchday 1.

Man of The Match : Mikey Moss.
